In 2013, 2014, I was invited by 2 notable incubation/acceleration hubs in Lagos to "pitch" my startup ideas in agriculture. I was utterly disappointed that none of them understands what agribusiness incubation, acceleration or innovation means. The height of it all was pitching just "an app" when you have "IDEAS and SOLUTIONS" to discuss.....
I have been a serial entrepreneur for over a decade, founded AgroInfoTech Africa in 2009, a company adding value to agriculture using new technologies, before the startup rave berthed our shores; but "these hubs" are majorly concerned about the replication of silicon valley innovations on the African continent. I believe incubation, acceleration centers should be industry-focused. Agribusiness innovation is different, especially in Africa.
After months of brainstorming with some friends, mentors, clients and some other fellows in agribusiness, churning ideas and launching ventures that will transform agriculture in Africa, AgroInfoTech Africa proposed and signed a MoU with The Institute of Agricultural Research & Training, Moor Plantation Ibadan to start AGRO INNOVATION HUB, an Agribusiness Innovation Centre.
The centre will incubate in-house ideas and embrace disruptive innovations in agriculture that can transform agribusiness in Africa, with focus on Research, Technology and Entrepreneurship. We intend to operate an agribusiness innovation community that will be driven on public-private partnerships, working with other relevant stakeholders to transform agriculture in Nigeria, West Africa and Africa by creating innovative ventures that are disruptive and can add value across the agribusiness value chain.
We are open for partnerships with relevant organizations or companies that can add value to this project as we build The Green Valley of Africa.
We welcome constructive comments, suggestions and criticism from the radar community.
