Today , i took time to evaluate my Affiliate websites in order to get a better sense of how my business is doing and where i need to give more focus. I am a University student and don't have luxury time , so i setup my business in such a way that it runs without my daily attention. I work mostly on weekends.

I am an affiliate marketer for one of the biggest e-commerce websites in Nigeria , as well as Amazon.com (still a newbie here but watchout )

Today , I am going to share my metrics on the e-commerce website & Amazon , in order to give a better idea of e-commerce in Nigeria.

I compared my metrics on XYZ e-commerce for the first 4 months of this year (Jan 2017 - April 22 , 2017) and pitched it against my metrics on Amazon for the same period. Here we go :

XYZ Affiliate Program (Jan 1st - April 22nd )

Total Clicks : 126,227

Confirmed Sales : 306

Rejected (Declined) Sales : 332

Total Confirmed + Declined Sales : 638

Conversion rate (Confirmed sales / total clicks X 100%) : 0.24%

Sales worth : #xx,xxx,xxx

Commission Earned : #xxx,xxx

I still have some pending sales for this month (over 80) however , it dosen't make sense to calculate it because i don't know if it will be approved or declined.

(Unfortunately i cannot reveal the name of the affiliate program nor post screenshots of my affiliate dashboard because i'm not sure whether or not i'm in violation of their privacy policy. Even though it is not stated on their policy page , this is Nigeria and anything can happen)

Amazon Associate Program (Jan 1 - April 2017) :

Total Clicks : 4,210

Total ordered items : 64

Rejected (Declined) Items : 0

Total Ordered + Declined Sales : 64

Conversion rate (Confirmed sales / total clicks X 100%) : 1.44%

Sales worth : $5131.67

Commission Earned : $296.8

Even with the high number of clicks and low conversion rate , the Nigerian e-commerce company still had over 51% declined sales which is quite terrible.

On the other had , Amazon had 0 returned sales (referred by me) in the last 4 months , which goes to show that e-commerce in Nigeria has a LOONGGG way to go.

Before we try to give excuses ,

  1. This Nigerian e-commerce company has an affiliate cookie length of 30days , while Amazon has a cookie length of 24 hours , yet conversion is much more better on Amazon

  2. The clicks i send to both e-commerce companies (from my blog)s 90% from organic traffic (Search Engines) , which is the best form of website traffic.

In my opinion , Nigerians will buy online when they're convienced the price online is cheaper than most retail stores and / or are buying online at a discount.

During 2016 black friday promotions in November , i sold almost 1,000 products and brought in over 48m naira for a certain e-commerce company in Nigeria. Under normal circumstances , i don't sell 1/4 of that in a month. So why the sudden increase in sales ?

The answer is obvious : "Cheap Price"

Even though , to be honest , there was no "Real" discount during the promotions , the mindset that they are getting a particular product at a cheaper price was compelling enough for Nigerians to sign up and use an e-commerce site.

Another devil is payment on delivery , which i believe has a huge influence on the number of declined sales.

So i think e-commerce in Nigeria will move forward when the price is cheaper and when payment & delivery system has been fixed.

Anyways , think 'm going to focus more on Amazon affiliate. I started in August 2016 and with what i've achieved so far , there's a lot of potential.

What do you think?
