Hey guys,
I am a 20-something from Europe and recently moved to Uganda. During my studies I got the chance to start a small company (online letting agency) which eventually got to a medium size and scaled to three countries in Europe. I am now in Uganda (a bit by chance as my girlfriend got a job here) and I am now looking at the opportunities that present themselves to me
!
I recently read a lot / became interested about telcos API's and the relations between startups and telco's so I wanted to start the discussion around them and hear your thoughts. Particularly, I have the following questions:
Aside from innovation - why would mobile carriers partner with startups? We all know that voice / data / etc. is becoming commoditized. Let's take for example Twilio which is "eating the profits" of mobile carriers. Or again Whatsapp/FB which rely mainly on advertising as an income method. I do get that if you build an app using mobile money, there will be more users on the network, but with aggregators etc people can easily switch.
What is the relationship with banks and mobile money and what are going to be future developments there?
A more legal one now: I saw that many African countries (Uganda for example) do not have any competition law in place. Mobile carriers can thus for now still build a monopoly (and build their own apps with api's), will that happen soon?
If you have an interesting opportunity, hit me up, I am living at the moment in Kampala but I am a world citizen and happy to move anywhere
