About a month ago, Mark Essein (Hotels.ng) released a new product called Spots.ng.
It’s a service for people to discover great destinations & tourist attractions in Nigeria.
(Product launch via fb post)It’s a beautiful project and a lot of people attest to that fact.
(Image of people attesting to that fact...duhhh??)
I find the idea delightful, especially because I’ve had something similar in mind for quite sometime but never did get to work on it.
Issue is, I feel the product has more potential than it currently presents and that Mark is (intentionally?) not putting a lot of commitment to it, maybe I’m wrong.
It seems it currently serves to showcase selected points of attraction by the Hotels.ng team & to promote Hotels.ng’s listings.
That’s okay, and it’ll probably drive up Hotel.ng’s revenue but with some more effort, commitments and alterations to the product, it could become a real standalone product on itself and generate as much revenue as Hotels.ng.So, I came up with this idea that it would be a fun little experiment to do a “Rethink of Spots.ng”, which I, some friends and anyone interested would work together on this and fully document and share constantly our process from Ideation to Product Development.
Possible benefits include but not limited to the following
1. It would serve as a learning opportunity for me and anyone else, especially those interested in how Product development works and how to turn their ideas into real product.
2. Since the whole process would be documented and shared. It would make development of products and services like these easier and faster for entrepreneurs since they’d have access to some of the assets and tools used in making this. The Idea.
‘Rethinking Spots.ng: Creating a Platform for People to Discover, Explore and Experience the Nigerian Culture and Tourism.’The Challenge.
Developing a new product is difficult. And time is a huge factor in creating platforms as such. So unless we have committed and skillful people for this project, it would be a serious challenge to overcome. Some benefits.
1. Opportunity to learn new things and share new ideas.
2. Opportunity to connect with different and intelligent Nigerians in and out.
3. Witness and be part of the birth of real product.
4. Equity?? (we should make money off this right?)The Process.
More on this later. But the idea is to use ‘Design Thinking’, ‘Agile Development’ processes and leverage social (media) tools and resources to develop and refine the idea and turn it into a product. ( I don’t even fully understand agile, but issokay, we can always learn). This is my very first post on this. If you have any interest, indicate below. No group has been created, and I don’t have any intention of creating any. I want this to take a form of it’s own before making any private group.
Happy New Year.
