Last week i accompanied a lady for “pepper soup things” shopping. Yes call me woman wrapper; she made me the CEO of friendzone Inc., so no hope again. I was doing my job!
Anyway, we stopped at a crayfish vendor’s and i saw him clean the crayfish grinder with a paint brush. This got me thinking on various ways customers might be using products/services for other purposes other than the original purpose. I am sure there are many others, but these are the ones i can think off for now.
Airtime as medium of exchange: Yes, it has been on since the early days of the GSM, but it is worthy of mention.
Website’s “Google map” as Google Map: I once saw a colleagues use the Google Map widget on a website to get directions to a destination. SMH for her. Checking destinations other than those that would bring the website owner money. So a website is getting visits and bounce rate is ok, but no nibbles. Blame Ajala the Google Mapper.
Activation messages to get time accuracy: MTN customers (as a former CSR) send activation messages (or any other messages that elicits network response) with low balance and use the time information in the network response text to set/get correct time. Well done, suffering the poor server because of time. SMH for them.
Facebook like button/Activity log as bookmarking tool: This one is me covers face. I am not making enough money to pay for high speed internet, so i use a cheap and plentiful data bundle with crappy speed. One of the downside is that i can't stream Facebook or youtube videos, so i have to download. So when i see see a video via Facebook app, i like and/or save it and then go open it under activity log with operamini. One click and i download and watch all liked/saved videos for the day before bedtime. So people liking your content might not mean they like it. Gary Vaynerchuk is my biggest victim. SMH for me.
Using payment channel discount for business: covers face again A certain ecommerce website gives some percentage discount if you pay for items using a particular payment option. Guess what? When i see an affordable item, I promote it to using screenshots (not links) and order for friends/people close by, pay for product, deliver to customers, collect full payment and keep
the “change”. Forgive me.Using whatsapp as “Evernote”: covers face again. I haven’t tried “Evernote”, but i know it links desktop and mobile. My device has 1GB ram with 8GB ROM, so i can’t afford to install every shinny app. One day i tried out whatsapp web and discovered i could paste links, texts, documents and images as comments on whatsapp on PC and it shows up on the recipients mobile. So i activated whatsapp on a second number and have basically being chatting with myself ever since. You know what? I will try out Evernote today.
So there you have it.
Honestly, i don’t know if these mean anything to you, but three things are evident.
A. Business owners need to learn how customers use their services; it might inspire them to create new offerings from customer’s usage behaviours/patterns.
B. I need to escape the friendzone.
C. I need to increase my income. Please epp me.
